  Here is a note on Salome (Selma) from the Kulm Messenger 23.9. 1915: Salome Leischner, the fifteen year old daughter of Gottfried Leischner of Lehr, Logan County, will be restored to her father according to an order by Judge Hanley. The child had been in the possession of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Hehr of Kulm. The mother of Salome was very sick after giving birth to the child and it was entrusted to Hehrs until the mother recovered. Mrs. Leischner died nine or ten months later, but the Hehrs became so attached to Salome that the father consented to allow the child to stay with them until she became confirmed. This took place January 3, 1915, whereupon the father demanded the return of Salome. The girl became attached to her foster parents, which made the task even harder for the natural parent. The case then narrowed down to whether the wishes of a minor child in the absence of other considerations should be permitted to outweigh and control the legal natural and presumptive rights of a parent to custody. Linde and Murphy, who appeared for Leischner, cited in their brief many instances where the desires of the natural parent control unless he has rendered himself unfit and unsuitable to assume the guardianship. Leischner however, is the father of nine children and able to give Salome a good home. The court holds that he is entitled to the custody of the child. Since the action started, Salome has returned to her father's home. - Bismarck Tribune
