Ellef Arneson, age 25, sailed on a ship named Norden, which departed from Bergen, Norway, on May 10, 1867, and arrived in Quebec, Canada on June 19, 1867.

At the age of fifteen, Elef went to Christiana, now Oslo, to become an apprentice to a shoemaker. After coming to America, he practiced the shoemaker trade for some time. Emma Johnson, the girl he had been engaged to in Norway, came to meet him here. She worked in Springdale until she and Elef were married. They then moved to Hayward, near Arena, WI, where he had a shoemaker shop, and in 1878 moved to his farm on Trout Creek. His wife died in 1882, leaving six children.[“History of the Arneson Family” booklet]

Hayward is where Elif and the others first came. Elif had a cobbler shop there. It was located about three miles west of the present village of Arena, WI, and north about three miles on Hayward Crossing Rd. Hayward was close to the Wisconsin River and there had been a mill, a ferry and assorted businesses there for a few years.

As per research done by Lonna: He owned a farm (80 acres) on Bryn Gywen (this is the correct spelling, meaning high hill or something similar), north of Barneveld WI. In about 1891 Elif sold the property which was purchased by a farmer who lived next door. He then moved to the village of Barneveld where he had a cobbler shop on Jones Street. A fire destroyed the building a year later.

Arne was known as "singing Arne" and had sung for royalty, as told by Lonna Arneson's father. But apparently he liked to drink and would have the money he earned spent before arriving home!
