Ceremony for a Hero - Skagway News, July 9, 2010 • Vol. XXXIII, No. 12
Ceremony for a Hero - Skagway News, July 9, 2010 • Vol. XXXIII, No. 12
Thanks to the efforts of Renee Rowan, a hero now has a commemorative gravestone.

Renee writes: I am not a quick at writing my reflections as Jeff Brady is in capturing the Commemoration of Marshal James Mark Rowan, my great grandfather. I just happened to look on line, skagwaynews.com, and was able to see the newspaper edition following my visit.

Jeff did an awesome job! His pictures were from a "just right" angle and reading his article made me relive that day again. I wish all of you could have been there.

Just a couple corrections, which are not a criticism of Jeff. He states it was my grandmother who told me the story of my great grandfather, but it was actually my mother who let not only me, but my brother and sister. Even if the stories lacked detail, my Mom told us what she knew.

Copy of Alonzo's death certificate, signed by wife Lilly.
His burial is a mystery. He is buried in the Baxter Springs Cemetery as per his death certificate, but the Alonzo H. Allen found in Section M of the cemetery is born in 1857, and is buried with Carrie E. (1861-1917) and Alfred H. (1883-1939). This same Alonzo H. is also found in
the 1930 Spring Valley, Cherokee Co. Kansas Census with daughters Mable C. McMinn and Lucile E. Allen. Clearly not our Alonzo. So where is our Alonzo to be found in the Baxter Springs Cemetery??
