8630 | TWO AREA BUILDINGS NAMED TO HISTORIC REGISTER The Winter House near Harvey and the Viking Lutheran Church near Maddock have been named to the National Register of Historic Places. The Winter house is located near the headwaters of the Sheyenne River between Goodrich and Harvey. The Viking Lutheran Church is located nine miles southeast of Maddock. Built by Daniel Winter about 1900, the Winter House is one of the distinctive types of architectural construction practiced by Germans from Russia who settled in the state. The home represents North Dakota's late rural settlement architecture and reflects successful adaptation by an ethnic group to a specific environment. The Winter House is rectangular, gable-roofed, and constructed of puddled clay-straw. Its principle dimensions are 18 feet by 28 feet. The walls are approximately two feet thick, providing effective insulation against winter cold and summer heat. The building's foundation is random, uncut fieldstone mortared with the same clay-straw mud. Fieldstone is also randomly incorporated throughout the principle walls. The roof is covered with wood shingles. The interior consists of two rooms and an unfinished loft. All inside wall surfaces were repeatedly painted in light colors, and each ceiling has at center a painted six-point geometric figure within a green circular border. The floors are earth. These aspects of the Winter House are typical of smaller Russian-German dwellings in North Dakota. The builder, Daniel Winter, emigrated from southern Russia in the 1890's and came to Sheridan County by way of other Russian-German settlements in South Dakota. Other family members settled nearby and built similar houses, but Daniel Winter's is the only one that survives. Although the building is apparently unaltered from original construction, it has been damaged by both weather and vandals. The house is approximately 17 miles southwest of Harvey. The Viking Lutheran . . .all original furnishings. The National Register of Historic Places is the nation's official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation. Once a resource is placed on the National Register, it receives limited protection from damage or destruction resulting from federally financed, assisted or licensed undertakings on the property. Nation Register properties are eligible to be considered for historic preservation grant-on-aid monies administered in North Dakota by the State Historical Society. Submitted by Hugo B. Raugust from the Harvey Herald* Reprinted with permission from Lyle Halvorson, Harvey Herald. | WINTER, Daniel (I12350)
