Ashley Tribune - April 2, 1925 (Thursday)

Mrs. Carolina (John) Henke who has been living with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Gustave Lieske in the Hellwig vicinity, died very suddenly last week Saturday at the age of about 63 years. She saw a prairie fire coming toward the house in which she was living and ran outside to keep the flames from destroying one of the haystacks, when she was overcome either by smoke or by heart failure and fell unconscious in the path of the flames. Her daughter saw her and carried her to the house before the flames reached her, but she died a few minutes later. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday by Rev. Bergstedt. She leaves eight children.

Karolina Henke (Bich) daughter of Christian and Maria (Treichel) Bich. was born on 11  Nov 1861 at Kulm, South Russia. She died on 28 March 1925, at age 63 years, 4 months and 11 days at the home of her son-in-law, Lesle[sic], north of Ashley, ND. In 1882 she was married to Johann Henke, his second marriage. They had 7 sons and 7 daughters. Her husband died in 2 July 1918. Preceding her in death are her parents, 2 brothers, one sister, 3 sons and 5 daughters and one son from the first marriage.
