Donald Duff

Extracted from the Tweedsmuir History of Thornloe; by Women’s Institute of Thornloe; published by Highway Book Shop, Cobalt, Ontario:

John Duff, father of Donald and John Duff, was born in Scotland. He married Elizabeth Stewart and when they came to Canada they settled in Rockwood, Halton County.

John Duff, Sr. fought in the Rebellion of Upper Canada and was imprisoned in Fort Henry and condemned to death. Along with three other men they dug their way out of prison and escaped to the United States in a boat. Later he was allowed to come back to Canada and he and a brother set up a foundry at Paisley, Ontario where he lived the rest of his life.

Two sons, Donald and John were born in Rockwood. John married Mary Jane Steward, daughter of Charles Stewart and Mary Jane Scraham on July 6th, 1904. Donald married Luella Cragg, daughter of David Cragg of Greenbank, Ontario and they came north in 1912.

The Duff families lived on farms and worked at timbering in the winters.
