Frank and June (Hirschmann) Avelar

Histories written by Sally (Carol Avelar) Chandler and Obituaries for Frank and June

Frank John Avelar

Frank (Butch) went into the U.S. Navy and served twenty years as a career, he was as high as you can go as a Chief Petty Officer. I even have documents when he made man of the month. After he retired from the Navy his wife June and children bought a home in Fremont, CA. He worked for U.S. Steel for a while then got a job an Ohlone College, and worked there till after his wife died. They were devoted to each other and needless to say he was devastated. She died of a blood clot on her brain that evidently was hereditary. She is and always will be missed and loved by all that knew her. She was a hell of lot of fun and loved to pull jokes on people - especially me (Sally) but that's all right. We laughed a lot and usually peed all over our selves as we both had weak bladders. (ha,ha)

He married again to Sandra Whitely Wiley who has two sons, Brett and Alan. They moved to Oregon where they bought a R.V. trailer sales business that they both ran their selves. Sandy is also a talented person. She makes the most beautiful paintings you ever saw. She also restores old steamer trunks,

Frank also has a lot of awards, loves to shoot pool, used to golf quite a bit. Loves to fish but don't like to eat it. He is also pretty funny at times and has a great sense of humor. He used to drink quite a bit but hasn't drank anything but non-alcohol for the past years. About his medical side, he had quite a lot of trouble with his hands, I thought for a while he would lose the use of them, but thank god he got the problem corrected.

June 29,1996. This morning my brother Skippy called he relayed some very bad news, Butchie has cancer and is not expected to last out the week. I can't express the shock I'm feeling right now, called my brother at the Vets hospital, he sounded so very old. I guess it is the medication he is getting. His last words were to me, he didn't want me to come out there, and he is not having a funeral or any other kind of services. He is to be cremated and shipped to the Holy Schepleture . His daughter will take care of the rest. I guess he will be buried with his first wife June. I hope that they are together at last and that he is at peace.

July 7,1996.... Sandy finally called me, my brother died at 12:55 a.m. on July 4th. He was alone; she had already left for the night. Evidently he became very sick and was in a lot of pain. They had to up the morphine, she said it was his last wish that he be cremated and his ashes be buried with June. She also had an autopsy performed on him. July 8,1996. Received a card from our cousin Barbara Houston for my brother, she paid for the spiritual benefits for Butchie, 30 masses and two novenas of masses to be held for him at the salesian missions. I thought that was really very nice of her. Also received a card and letter from our Aunty Grace. Today is August the 12, I still don't know if Butchie is buried yet or not. Got a note from Sandy the other day, she said the cemetery would bury him for $400 dollars if the family would not be there. Sandy said no way would that happen... I thought of a few things about Butch when he was a kid that I'd like to write about... as a teenager if remember correctly Butch worked at a bowling alley on 7th Street. He used to set the pins for the bowlers. That's before automation came along. He went to Prescott Elementary right around d the corner from 11th Street where we used to live. He was pretty popular, he was a good looking devil, I think his first girlfriends name was Eileen Romero she lived in the projects on I believe 18th Street. His best friends were Jerry Gonzalves, Richard Shook, and Danny Sousa and a red headed kid name something Flynn. Butch and Jerry joined the Navy together. I think Jerry made a career out of the navy like Butch did. The redhead guy's name was Floyd Finn. Butch later went to McClymonds high school then quit and finished his education in the Navy. I'm writing all this down so who ever reads this book will know about this family...

June Theresa Hirschmann

I first met June when I was 18 years old. She was really cute and worshipped my brother. They married in Reno, and later on had a son. I remember when she was pregnant she was so tiny she used to put a pillow on so she would look pregnant. Then they went to the Philippines and I married and moved to Kentucky, but June always kept in touch with me and sent me pictures of Frankie and then later Cindy, she was so much fun. I never got to see them again until 1978; my children were 10 and 5 then. June hadn't changed a bit; we had more fun together always pulling jokes and acting silly. I believe I could write a book on us even though we weren't together as much as I would have liked but when we were, we had ball. I love to look back at the good times. Butch and June took in both of my parents when my father got sick and helped take care of him till the day my dad died... not many daughter-in-laws would have done that. When June died like everyone I was devastated. She died just like her mother of a blood clot to the brain. It was quick and not painful, but it like to killed my brother. I wish she could have lived to see both of her grandsons, knowing June she would have made a wonderful grandmother. She loved life, I just wish to god hers could have been prolonged.
