Lloyd Esse passed away Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 24, 2002, at Valleyview Retirement Nursing Facility.

He was born Nov. 13, 1906, in Taylor, Stark County, N.D., to Andrew Esse and Ingebra Belle Rue Esse. He grew up in Taylor, graduated from high school and enrolled in Dickenson College for a short time.

He served his country in World War II in the 16th Seabee Battalion in the South Pacific Islands and an ironworker building airfields. He was stranded in Las Vegas on the way to California in 1936 when he hired as a construction worker on Boulder (Hoover) Dam. His work on the dam resulted in his becoming a member of the California Ironworkers. Upon completion of the dam, Lloyd's career encompassed work on numerous other dams, bridges and high-rise buildings throughout most of the western states. His demise ended over 65 years in ironwork, ending as a member of Local 378 of the California Structional Ironworkers in Benicia, Calif.

His marriage to his first wife, Marge, ended and he then spent 18 years happily married to Francine ending in her death. He thereafter spent some 20 years in San Pablo in retirement before moving to Boise in 1994.

Surviving family members are a niece, Mary Lou Queen and Jack; two nephews, Donivan Schoonover and Joan of Boise, and Richard Schoonover and Roberta of Donnelly. He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Esse; and a sister, Luella Schoonover.

The family wishes to thank Nina, Myra, Virginia, Peggy, Jay and the other members of Valleyview Retirement who made Lloyd's final years the best they could be. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital Fund.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 707 W. Fort St., Boise. A private family burial will be held later.
